Welcome Starla Kaye

Hot Men, Naughty Women

I love writing about hard-working, hard-loving men with some kind of chip on their shoulders when it comes to women. Give me a man who has been “roughed up” by some unworthy woman and I have a need to find him that special woman to heal his bruised heart. Not that I want to make it easy for either of them. I still enjoy making that gruff, tough man suffer some, but at the hands of a woman he wants to resist and yet can’t.

Torturous woman that I am, I have messed with the minds/emotions of men of all types, in many romance sub-genres. In Hawke’s Lady, from Blushing Books, my hero merrily sails the seas and avoids his “real” life as an English Lord by being the infamous Pirate Hawke. He is basically content with his life until he discovers a stowaway on his ship. Lady Sabrina Whitley has dared to hide on his ship…even worse, she takes his punishment, sasses him, and completely upsets his world. What’s a hard-hearted (he thought) pirate to do?

Moving a bit forward in time to the American West, I found a way to “torture” my hero in If You Loved Me, from Blushing Books. Mac MacDonald, as next in line to be a Scottish Chieftain, always knew he had to marry for the good of his clan. But when his father arranged a marriage with an American businessman’s young daughter, he is outraged and yet must do his duty. Complicated circumstances separate Mac and Caitlan from being actual man and wife, complete with vows to one another to end the farce of a marriage as soon as possible. Of course everything takes another strange turn and each believes the other has died. Until Caitlin learns the truth and goes to find her husband now living in Kansas and acting as a sheriff. Needless to say when his “dead” wife suddenly appears on the stage, Mac’s life takes yet another twist.

I couldn’t give up with my enjoyment of playing with a hardened cowboy with a wounded heart. In another historical Western, Whiskey’s Rebellion from Blushing Books, I found a way to drive a US Marshal with a troubled background and a distrust of women to the edge of sanity with Whiskey, the sister of his trail-riding partner. A deathbed promise has Morgan agreeing to marry the mischievous imp of Dodge City against his better judgment. What sane man would tie himself to a fool woman who flies into town on a hot air balloon?

Shifting to the contemporary times, I moved on to torturing a modern day cowboy. In So Not a Cowgirl from Blushing Books, Drew is stressed out working his dude ranch, dealing with a new animal rescue business, and trying to keep up with the ranch books. He needs help, but not from the sexy friend of his sister. He’s barely survived two bad marriages and women are too much trouble. Except he can’t seem to send Tanya packing, even though she ignores all of his rules and time schedules. She turns out to be more trouble than any other woman in his life…and yet.

Then in Bet Your Boots, from Blushing Books, I again wreck havoc with a cowboy set in his ways. Cole is a twice-divorced former bull rider now running the family ranch. Women are not on his good list at the moment. But, of course, I couldn’t let him wallow in his self-pity. So I had his sister rent a part of the dude ranch out for the summer to a friend of hers, a romance therapist. Not only does she entice him far more than he is happy with, but she tricks him into helping with some of her client sessions. He is not a happy cowboy…still…

Every one of my heroes, from whatever time period or sub-genre, finds his life complicated, and improved by a woman he can’t resist. And each of the heroines is more than worthy of these special men.

  1. Starla, it’s cool to read how you love making your men work for the woman they deserve. Nice blog. I’ve heard some of these stories in their infancy. It’s neat to see the final product with some great covers.

    • Thanks, Pat. Yes, I’m all about “torturing” my men…okay, sometimes the women get a bit “tortured” as well by their stubborn men. And I always enjoy seeing my covers.
